Backup to removable disk

Hi@all,

For small setups, I find the backup included in the PVE quite nice.

Does anyone have experience setting this up with one removable bay and two removable disks?

Background to my question: In the configuration of the backup, I specify how many versions are to be kept. Afterwards, the system removes the surplus version. However, when the disk is changed, it probably cannot do this.

In addition, the users do not always change the disk on the same day.

Can something like this be set up?

I am aware that the better variant (as I will also implement here) is with a PBS (ON and OFF side). But it is also too complex for very small setups.

Could you explain the environment a little more? Why can't you use the two drives at once through the bay, and why are they getting periodically swapped out?

If you are trying to maintain one "storage device" in PVE that actually corresponds to multiple disks that are being periodically swapped, I don't see automatically pruning as an option, as it'll probably confuse the system.

It is a single host with PVE) and some VM's running in PVE.

At night, PVE should create a dump of all VMs on an external USB hard disk.

However, the hard disks (two) are to be changed once a week so that one of them is always out of the house. In case something really bad happens (fire, water or theft).

Yes, I thought something like that. In the backup in PVE, I configure how many versions of the dumps are kept. But if the hard disk is changed, PVE may not have access to the version that is to be deleted.

Maybe someone else has an idea how I can set up a backup with removable disks in PVE without having to install a PBS externally.
