I assume turnkey implies an LX(C) container? If that's the case, then you will be able to read on another machine (if that machine supports reading ZFS or ext4)
you could pass through the physical disk directly to the guest.
This allows writing down whatever file system you like and therefore pull data directly off it.
I use a similar approach myself, but with another purpose. I am managing ZFS pools directly within a VM without the need of doing a pci-e passthrough.

Apologies, don't get that. What do you mean with extract?
In the end it is a storage device (block) and therefore it is irrelevant.
Solely the filesystem/data on it defines how you can work on a PC.

For example: if the nuc fails to boot or the data is compromised, I would like to have an EXTERNAL usb backup disk that I can read on another pc. I would like to simplify my life if there is a problem.

As far as I understand you want to create a backup of your M2 based contents, that can be read elsewhere.
Tell us more about your configuration. What is on that M2 (Filesystem, setup) because this also leads to certain options?
Are you running VMs? Containers?
If you want to be able to read things "directly on another PC" - what OS is used there? Windows? Linux? OSX?
