The performance is worse than with VirtIO and it's also not as well maintained: https://pve.proxmox.com/pve-docs/chapter-qm.html#qm_hard_disk But for certain OSes like Windows, you can't use VirtIO out-of-the-box, but need to install the drivers first (can also be done during OS installation): https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Windows_VirtIO_Drivers
