Microsoft Small Business Server 2008 (running in KVM) requires a removable USB or Firewire device be attached in order to use the built-in backup.

These are not bus options in the web interface.

Please advise.

Thanks.

can´t you use a tape drive in sbs 2008 (in 2003 this was the prefered way).

removeable usb devices can be used in a KVM guest but it is not very handy - I highly recommend to go for a tape drive backup solution. maybe this article is interesting here: http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Tape_Drives

Being that the link provided details passthrough configuration, I'm not sure my intent is understood.

I'm not interested in supplying the guest with a physical device that would connect via host's (or client's) USB / Firewire bus.

I'd like there to be an image file in a datastore presented to the guest as if it were a removable device whose bus is of the USB or Firewire variety.

Microsoft says:
"Windows Server 2008, the underlying technology for Windows Small Business Server 2008, does not support for tape backup devices. If you require support for tape backup, contact your tape drive manufacturer for information about hardware and software compatibility with Windows Server 2008."

The backup configuration wizard refers to a helpfile which states:
"You can back up your data to any external storage device that supports USB 2.0 or IEEE 1394."

I would imagine a tape drive utiliziing the IEEE 1394 protocol would be identified by the wizard as a valid target and would thus be presented for selection.

How to configure an image file to do this is beyond me.

The underlying motivation behind configuring this is simply that the unconfigured backup is the only "Red Alert" left in SBS's management console & I'd like for it to be "Green All Good" across the board.

what about third party backup tools for sbs2008, e.g. backup exec for sbs?

It's already running Backup Assist, & I'm quite happy with it.

However it doesn't satisfy the management console so it can go green.

look like this is a question for windows support. ask Microsoft how to disable this warning.
