Hello,
i have a clustered installation with:

  • Three proxmox 2.2-31/e94e95e9 nodes
  • Storage for VMs on iSCSI
  • Storage for VMs on NFS

For several reasons, i need to do mainteinance and i would like to add more nodes to the cluster to move VMs.
Is possible to add nodes with a more recent Proxmox version (3.1-21/93bf03d4) to the cluster of 2.2-31 nodes?

I would like to:
  1. Add two more nodes to the cluster
  2. Migrate VMs to these new nodes
  3. Do HW mainteinance to the old servers
  4. Upgrade Proxmox from 2.2 to 3.1

Many thanks
Bruno

Hi Marco,
many thanks for your reply: however it seems that you didn't added new nodes 3.1 to 2.2 cluster.

As last exit, i planned to:

A) Install 3.1 on a fresh server, a bit more capable than the 2.2 nodes
B) Offline migrate some VMs to the new node. Turn off some less used VMs
C) Break old cluster and upgrade the 2.2 machines to 3.1
D) Add old machines to the new cluster

This should end in a lot of more work, but it seems safe :)

Let me know what you think about

Hi Marco,

well, not exactly that, but I was in a state (between step 4 an 5) where I had two different version nodes in the same cluster (node 1 was 2.1, node2 was 3.1) and migration worked (though I only tried offline) so this could help in your situation anyway.

btw, I think to remember I tried also 3.1 join a 2.x cluster (on a test cluster), and that it worked... but can't recall now exactly. of course pve staff will never recommend you to do that as many things can go wrong, but probably if you just join, move, upgrade, it could work (no guarantee :-D )

Thanks Marco.

I'll definitively wait for an answer from PVE staff just to be sure. It's obvious that my target is to join, move and immediately upgrade other nodes to 3.1!

Hello,
i've tested in lab the following procedure:

a) adding 3.1 node do a 2.2 cluster
b) upgrade 2.2 server to 3.1

It seems to work. Today i'll try to upgrade my production cluster.

Bruno

It worked fine. The important thing is, when upgrading nodes, is to do an apt-get update && apt-get upgrade to get PVE 2.3 before following the upgrade procedure from 2.3 to 3.1.

Missing the intermediate upgrade will lead to great problems, with the need to backup and reinstall the whole node :(
