Now to me trying to delete /usr/local or /usr/local/share seems like a really bad idea!

That's why neither directory is deleted. They would be if they were actually empty, as they are of no relevance to the package manager.

This is standard dpkg behaviour to cleanup unused directories.

I had the same warning during the update. I browsed thru every subfolder under /usr/local and usr/local/share, but there was literally nothing in it, so I just manually deleted them. YMMV of course
