    critical update notifications

A kernel update installation has to be planned and customers informed in advance because it might need a reboot. WILL need a reboot in this case because I'm not waiting for Kernelcare to release an update. You can't plan when you don't know what's going on. Not all kernel updates are critical...

    critical update notifications

There are companies that do this, and do it well. The closest comparison I can think of is Plesk. Plesk takes a bunch of components, such as Apache, Bind, MySQL, Postfix, nginx and so forth, and wraps them in a commercial control panel. Not so different to Proxmox really, is it? When a serious...

    critical update notifications

Yes, I get notifications of updates. There is nothing in the information that tells me if there's a critical vulnerability though. Not even if something is really, really important. Yes, in the gui I see a changelog and an "urgency", but you have to go through each one individually. Sometimes a...

    critical update notifications

The new kernel flaw that's making the news is very worrying. I hope an email be sent to Proxmox Subscribers when a kernel update for Proxmox is available that resolves this? There doesn't seem to be a Proxmox "updates" mailing list or a "security" mailing list or blog/rss/anything. I really...

Oops, no VM backups because pve-root is full!?

Well, since you can create a disk volume within lvm-thin, which can have a filesystem, then I don't know why I thought you could not do what you have done. D'oh. Sorry. Unfortunately proxmox is mainly aimed at multi-server clusters with remote/shared filesystems, hence the default arrangement...

Oops, no VM backups because pve-root is full!?

You aren't the only one confused about these things. The moment I think I have a grasp on things, I learn there's more to it, or that I was wrong about an assumption that I'd made. With that firmly in mind: You can't create a volume within the existing LVM-Thin as it is a volume itself. And...

Oops, no VM backups because pve-root is full!?

Can you add an extra drive to your system? You can then use that for local backups. It doesn't have to be SSD - you can use a large capacity HDD instead. That's what we do, anyway. Then you can add a "Directory", say "backups" and backup there.

    Managing updates

I already test everything on a test cluster. And I already subscribe to the Enterprise repo. I have since day 1, on both the production and test cluster. I would subscribe to the support option, but as all my customers are businesses, I have to do maintenance over the weekend. And support is not...

    Managing updates

I'm a little concerned about the way that updates are released for Proxmox. As we require stability more than anything else, we are very cautious about updates. I am also new to Debian and Proxmox, so there's even more caution involved. A recent update that was released for 5.3 had the...

[SOLVED] Latest systemd/udev breaks network device naming!!

A user reported a similar issue via the mailing list 20/03/19 after he upgraded to PVE 4.15.18-35. I'm not sure if a reason was discovered for that or not.

    Proxmox VE as NTP Server

You can run an NTP server in almost any OS in a VM or in a Linux Container and the instructions to do so would be generic. Here is one option: https://www.tecmint.com/install-and-configure-ntp-server-client-in-debian/ You could potentially run this directly on the hardware node, I suppose. But...

    High SWAP usage

I think everyone has run out of ideas. Have you looked at https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/swappiness-question.42295/ recently? The key issue with your problem is that you are experiencing slowdowns or worse when your swap fills. This should not happen UNLESS you are also running out of...

Upgrade to kernel 4.15.18-12-pve goes BOOM!

That's very useful, thank you. Keep in mind that I'm not particularly familiar with Debian. I've been using Redhat/Centos for the past 20 years or so, and I'm not used to packages being replaced like this and don't know how to handle it or know what's important and what isn't. Give me another...

    can't shutdown/reset/stop

ALL the VMs or just that single VM? (don't they have different PIDs? Or are they linked in some way that is beyond my knowledge?)

Upgrade to kernel 4.15.18-12-pve goes BOOM!

How common is this issue likely to be? I don't particularly want to apt purge insserv sysv-rc initscripts openrc unless I have to, and it would seem you can't tell if you need to unless you get the errors after running apt-get dist-upgrade.

    can't shutdown/reset/stop

Thank you dietmar. I wasn't sure if it was safe to do so. In a worst-case scenario, is it safe to kill the PID of "/usr/bin/kvm -id <vmid-of-VM-that-wont-shut-down>"

    can't shutdown/reset/stop

ok, to answer my own question, I had to wait for shutdown to timeout, and then I could reset (or more importantly, to stop it)

    can't shutdown/reset/stop

I was trying to boot a VM from a Centos live CD, and ended up with a "No DEFAULT or UI configuration directive found" and a "boot:" prompt on the console. Nothing I can do via the GUI will allow me to reset/shutdown this VM. Shutdown just sits there waiting and waiting. And I suspect that...

Backup LVM-thin partition to external HDD ?

I'm not sure I understand. You can use vzdump to backup disk images stored in LVM-Thin just like any other storage type, which would allow you to store in on the external HDD. vzdump does not support incremental backups though. There is no native proxmox tool that does this, unfortunately.

[SOLVED] After upgrade from 5.2-5, my server is now named "CloudInit"?

It depends...the very first command shown in the instructions on https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Cloud-Init_Support says to run "apt-get install cloud-init" but perhaps does not make quite it clear enough that this must be run in the VM you want to configure to use clou-init and not on the Proxmox...
