Loud Fan Noise on Dell OptiPlex 7010 Running Proxmox - How to Diagnose?

Hi everyone,

I recently noticed that my PC running Proxmox has been making a loud fan noise that was not there before. I cannot open the case right now to physically inspect it, so I am hoping to troubleshoot this through the command line.

My system specs:
CPU: Intel Core i5-3570 @ 3.40GHz
RAM: 32GB DDR3
Storage: 480GB Kingston SSD + 1TB WD Blue HDD
GPU: AMD Radeon HD 7470
OS: Proxmox VE 9.1.6

My questions:
1. What is the best way to identify which fan is making the noise - CPU, GPU, or PSU?
2. Is there a way to check fan speeds and temperatures through the command line in Proxmox?
3. Is there anything specific about running Proxmox on this hardware that could cause fans to run loudly?

Any advice on how to diagnose this would be appreciated. Thanks.

Try sensors, which shows temperatures and fan speeds for lots of hardware: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/Lm_sensors . Since this is not Proxmox specific, other Linux guides about such things will also apply.

For troubleshooting boot a recent live Linux, like Ubuntu 24.04 and see if the same noise is present.
If not, then compare the "dmesg" and "lsmod" output for differences.

There are some systems that rely on ACPI implementations for thermal control. And I have previously read, that not all of those kernel modules are present and/or automatically loaded on Proxmox.
Let's see what you can find out, if it isn't just a defective fan.

Previously, this PC was kept at my parents’ house, and the case release button was broken. I sent it to a repair shop to have the button replaced and the PC serviced.
