Under 7.2 I can not create new VMs. Likewise i can't start VMs that were created in prior versions. I see errors stating QEMU must be version 3.0 Reinstalled 7.1 now all better after commenting out the PVE in my apt/sources.list repositories.

Keep in mind when creating a ZFS pool any data on the drives is lost.

Odd, seems to only be an issue for VMs with larger drivers. That is I can create a VM with same parameters but only 32GB disk. When I try with a 250GB disk it fails. I suppose I can simply write my data to the ZFS pool. Still odd though.

Yes, boot disk is separate. Storage is two more in a ZFS mirror. I'll try the above suggestion, once it works then upgrade the OS to 6.

So I am planning to move from spinning rust for my boot disk to SSD, at the same time also plan to move upto Proxmox 6. Is there a recommended process for boot disk change? Searches lead me to most VM backups or use DD for the OS which seems clumsy. I could start fresh but that too seems like...

@Stoiko - your suggestion worked, huge thanks! @jim.bond.9862 - yes I plan to add another NIC. More than likely this will not be as power efficient as say a USG Pro or EdgeRouter 4 but that wouldn't be as much fun. Already have the box running as a NAS and hosting a few VMs
