And in recent ZFS versions a special device also acts as slog if no dedicated slog exists. I can easily imagine people in homelabs having such a setup, I definitively haveThen he should have said so; a SLOG is a different animal ;-)

Probably you set up something wrong. I don't know how to say it in English without sounding like a dick, but the fact that you used a SN700 as SLOG tells me that you don't misunderstood ZFS.I have to say that I lost a 500G AND a 1000G SN700 in short succession in 2025. Both had a few percent on them. All was great until it wasn't. No idea what happened. I did not even go through warranty as I was done with WD with that. Been running ZFS and they were log devices.
I think I have to re-read some documentation...A async write, goes into ARC
Even if not solving anything in this thread, there's added valueWhat are we solving for again?
What did I understand or misunderstand? I'm baffled...? Oh.. You meant that it hasn't PLP.. But I use a UPS.Probably you set up something wrong. I don't know how to say it in English without sounding like a dick, but the fact that you used a SN700 as SLOG tells me that you don't misunderstood ZFS.
You are welcomeI for one learned that ZIL can be on svdev, thanks to @Johannes S![]()
Here's the thing with PLP. Leaving aside the power loss protection aspect, the PLP also makes the drive perform ZFS operations faster. When ZFS writes to the ZIL, it issues a cache flush and waits for the drive to confirm the data is durable. With PLP, the drive can safely treat data in cache as “durable.” It acknowledges the flush almost immediately, in microseconds. Without PLP, like the SN700, the drive has to actually program the data to NAND before it can honestly acknowledge the flush. NAND program latency is much higher, so each sync write waits on it. The UPS doesn't mitigate this aspect of not having PLP.What did I understand or misunderstand? I'm baffled...? Oh.. You meant that it hasn't PLP.. But I use a UPS.
