Hetzner is dropping Ceph support

Hello, hello,

I just got informed that:
For a long time, we have offered you two different storage types for our Intel based standard servers: Local (NVMe SSD) and Network (Ceph). Local storage has always offered superior storage performance and latency while being on the same level of stability, making it the best choice.

What do you think is the reason here? Is Ceph not worth it? In the long run it works just fine to have ZFS with replication every 5 minutes all over the place? Maybe it's more cost effective and less complex.

Looking forward for your opinion,

Thank you,
Rares

Sure, local storage cost less and is simpler. But it is something completely different than ceph (a distributed, shared, network storage).

Generally, when a for-profit company stops providing a service it means they are not making money on it.
Ceph is an open source product developed by many different individuals and some corporations, that means that Hetzner was not spending money on software development. So it leaves just one expense - support. We can guess that not enough people were willing to pay to cover the support and make profit. And that even keeping Ceph offering around as loss leader was not worth it.

Keep in mind these appear to be custom Ceph nodes/services that are being dropped. It doesn't stop you from buying nodes with NVMe disks and using them with your own Ceph installation or PVE/Ceph. But it does mean that supporting that setup is no longer Hetzner problem.

I am not familiar with Hetzner offering - were the Ceph nodes perhaps HDD based, given that they stress performance benefit of local storage?
