I'm newbie @ this so pls excuse " dumb " questions .....i'm interested in replacing Vmware with this ... BUT... all i read about is how proxmox is a plugin for VMware or others and a iso image .... but how do you install proxmox as it's own standalone system to replace systems like VMware ...... pls clear up the confusion for me .... what am i missing here

i want to use it with pbxflash ....

thanks

ummmm maybe you misunderstood the question .... an iso in no good to me... i DON'T have physical access to the server .. vmare and others like it can be installed remotely can't yours ??? ... sure once you hsve a system like vmware then you can load the iso but that's kinda pointless right ....loading one vm on top of another ... don't you have any other way of installing it ... ???

What kind of access do you have to the server?
It´s also possible to install Proxmox on top of a running Debian (->wiki)

Sven

this is our own dedicated server .....

http://www.serverloft.com/dedizierte-server/server-details.php?products=0

we have all kinds of access EXCEPT physical acess ..... root , you name it ..... let me know how to do this .... if it works like you say we are interested in purchasing the mail server etc... looking for something to replace what we have now ..... but we must see it working first !!! :) we have a test server waiting to use asap...

ps ... does it " have to be" debian .... jusat curious cuz i'm a windows dude ... new to this linux thing and barely familiar with centos 5 let alone getting to know something else like debian now ... although i can install ANY OS you like .....

maybe you should try this with a local system first before running on a hot system if you haven´t done this ever before;-)

proxmox is running on debian so you can easily install it to a running debian (lenny)

i dont know servers from fuijitsu but the server is supporting remote-management, this way it should be possible to use a local iso for booting as with most servers having ipmi-module. simply ask the support of serverloft.

just saw, that there is only software-raid for this server, this isn´t supported for proxmox ve ->wiki / hardware

i see your a junior member yourself and assume you don't have much experience with it .... i need feedback from someone with more experience ... there has to be someone with enuf experience using this program to be able to do it remotely imo ???

maybe you should ask for commercial support, if the available docu doesnt help you

btw the memberstate doesnt tell anything about it-experiences ;-)

That is the quickest way to annoy people and ensure you *don't* get any help!

Obviously, I am only a 'member', not a 'senior member' so feel free to ignore me as well. Although I am not a junior member, so maybe you shouldn't.

Or, maybe, just maybe you should appreciate people giving up their spare time to help you and be gracious and grateful enough to thank them instead of dismissing them based on some arbitrary label. Sheesh.

ooooooooooh get a grip .... how pathetic ... i forgot were back in the kindergarten school yard with 2 yr old egos ...... if this is your way of increasing sales in a crappy economy ...think again ..scare them away ...i'm sure the owners would be so proud of you..... NOT! how silly of me to expect a responsible response to my legitmate question ..... if you don't have a solution to the problem or can't contribute something CONSTRUCTIVE .... keep out of it ..... maybe your time is worthless ( as it seems otherwise why would you waste your time and mine posting a "poor me/bruised ego" reply ) but mine is not .... i'm interested in solutions not guestimates .... can you answer the question or not ...... go ahead ban me see if i care ....my $$$ will follow me becuz i was seriously considering purchasing the mail server and plugins ...but why should i now if this is how you treat prospective clients ....

if this is your way of increasing sales in a crappy economy
With the exception of maybe three people (who all have a prominent 'Proxmox Staff' logo) nobody here benefits financially if you decide to use Proxmox or not. Me, I couldn't care less if you use Proxmox or not. However, I, like many others here are prepared to give up our time to help you, and others. As we ourselves have been helped. That is the spirit of open-source; use it, but contribute back when you can.

There is also an informal (and sometimes quite explicit) etiquette about behaviour on forums:

- always be respectful and polite; people are doing this out of their own
- if you don't agree with an answer - fine, but propose a better one
- don't post the same question in irrelevant forums

how silly of me to expect a responsible response to my legitmate question
You have already received legitimate responses.

why would you waste your time and mine posting a "poor me/bruised ego" reply
Because I found your dismissal of somebody (who I don't know) who was trying to help you arrogant and offensive. Your aren't entitled to anybody else's time - if they give up their time for you, be grateful. If you want to guarantee somebody's time then buy commercial support.

I don't really see how my ego is at issue here? I wouldn't be surprised if the poster you dismissed was a bit upset.

I was also trying to help you. If you had apologised and changed your tone I expect more people would have helped. Maybe you don't realise, but you are coming across like a testosterone fuelled teenager who thinks they are entitled to the world. I have three kids of my own, I don't need to baby sit another one.

....my $$$ will follow me becuz i was seriously considering purchasing the mail server and plugins ...but why should i now if this is how you treat prospective clients ....
Two comments:

- this is the wrong forum to talk about the mail server
- I have no affiliation with Proxmox. I guess you just don't realise how open communities work? I have never used the mail server, but I hear good things about it. I would still recommend you try it.

Tom/Dietmar - I have maybe stepped out of line here, if so, apologies and feel free to delete this response. If this had been my forum I would block this thread.

thanks for explaining how a community works! keep up your contributions, 99 % of the member here are always quite happy to being a part of this project and the remaining 1 % will learn (ok, a bit optimistic ...)
