@curruscanis Have you used "Verify" function for this particular backup? It probably will fail on this chunk, but for debugging or out of curiosity you may try. If it fails, it will rename the chunk ....bad.0 and maybe the error will give way...

If your current systems are working to your satisfaction, perhaps you should not rush into an upgrade. If you are upgrading to a new family of the hypervisor (8 to 9) be aware that the 9 is likely not explicitly tested with 6.x Kernel any more...

Yes thank you for sharing how you fixed your issue. I've got some 2016 servers that need to be upgraded to 2025, and secure boot is a first step. ;)

OK the solution is way easier than I thought. Just power down, delete EFI disk, recreate it with pre-enrolled keys checked, then boot the VM. Finally found this in the manual under "10.2.11. BIOS and UEF" section.
