This is absolutely the wrong attitude for anything in IT. Why are you ok with having to do updates to keep hardware warranty and not update software for support? This seems very backwards. Now the real issue isn't that you need to do updates... -

Now if this is the official way forward and all previous methods are obsolete, then this is the way it is.
