I've been using Proxmox VE (and the Mail Gateway) for several months now. I'll start by saying they're both excellent, high-quality products and I greatly appreciate the support they receive on this forum.
Yesterday I attempted to get Zimbra up and running. I worked on this for several hours and simply wanted to provide some feedback to the forum on my experience.
Primarily, I had all kinds of problems with 64-bit (Ubuntu 8.04.3 amd64 and the Zimbra Ubuntu 8.04.3 amd64). Memory was the biggest problem as the JVM wanted HUGE amounts to run which effected multiple services. I'm using server-class hardware with 16GB of RAM and ended up with 48GB of SWAP to get it running. Performance was very sluggish and I still had services that didn't want to stay running.
After I destroyed this VM, I loaded up Ubuntu 8.04.1 32 and installed the Ubunut 32-bit version of Zimbra. I used the recommended 3GB of memory and 3GB of SWAP and it came up perfectly with performance very close to a stand-alone server install.
For those of you that have installed Zimbra, you know it's all about how DNS is set up with A and MX records. This excellent guide can be followed to the letter and you'll have a perfect Zimbra system running in a Proxmox OpenVZ container.
Dietmar - on this page in your documentation, you refer to the Ubuntu 8.04.3 amd64 template but once the instructions begin, you refer to the Ubuntu Hardy Standard 8.04.1 32 template. I think this is a bit confusing and with all the trouble I has with 64-bit, I would suggest removing the reference to the 64-bit template.
Again, thanks for the most excellent product.
