ZFS mirror RAID advice for snapshot storage

Hi there,

I've done a lot of reading on this before posting but really confused. I run a QNAP NAS at home so I know a bit about ZFS, thin provisioning, and thick provisioning but it also walks me through it quite well.

I have two 6 TB spindle disks that I made into a ZFS RAID within the Proxmox VE 8.0.4 GUI. Although, I was surprised I couldn't store snapshots on it and I could only use raw storage VM disks. I want to use thin provisioning.

I then was reading I could use directory storage. I called my ZFS RAID array wolf and made a folder storage linking to /wolf/kemo calling the folder storage kemo. Yay that seems to work!

But I hear about the folder requires the file system overhead, which I didn't want. I just want this wolf array to store snapshots and VM disks on it, the VMs being thin provisioned so I don't want to use raw.

I've only been learning about thin provisioning for the last year so could someone explain it to me like I'm 12?

Thanks!

PS: I also have a RAID1 setup on two 1TB nvme drives that proxmox is installed on. My main VMs and their boot hard drives are all stored there. This storage is secondary for Plesk backup dumps, media file storage, etc.
