ZFS in VM

Hello,

i am currently running pve 7.3 with zfs (RAID 1).

I have created a dataset for the vm images.

does this protect the vms data even if the vms are running ext4?

Do I need to set up the vms with zfs as well to establish data integrity?

Hi,
if you set up a disk image for the VM on the ZFS backed storage, then a zvol is created and zfs handles the data redundancy independent of the file system you create on the volume.

Keep in mind that your VM's filesystem can also be corrupt and ZFS cannot do anything about it. It is, however, save with respect to hardware-related silent data corruption.
