Xen to Prox

I have transferred all of my *nix, windows 2003 servers to proxmox by exporting the vm from xen in xva format. I used xen convert to ova file. I then created the vm within proxmox and import the vhd hard drive. This method worked well and I see no issues.

However, I have tried the same procedure with windows 2016 server and I get a blue screen with unhandled exception each time. I have done a lot of reading and I have tried many ways to transfer including clonezilla.

I start by uninstalling zen from add/remove programs. I then delete the two xen services, delete all xen dll's from the system32, delete the other directory's for xen within program files and program data. I have also applied a registry file that was recommended.

I was told by a friend that the windows server 2016 has to be ide mode as well but xen only runs in ide mode anyway so that shouldn't be at issue.

I have installed multiable clean installs windows 2016 vm's on the proxmox just to make sure that wasn't an issue.

I am open to any suggestions you may have,

Thanks, Michael

The new virtual hardware needs to mirror the current setup on Xen.

Another way to migrate the Win 2016 is to use the windows backup. Create the backup including the system state, install a new Win2016 on Proxmox and restore the backup. That will give you a fresh install with all virtio drivers + the data and state of the old system.
