Windows VM on SSD or CCTV HDD?

Hi,

I've been running all my VMs on an SSD which is now getting full. One of those VMs is running Windows with Blue Iris which is a NVR for CCTV cameras. Those cameras are set to always records 24/7. I've purchased a 4TB WD Purple Surveillance HDD (designed for 24/7 writing to for CCTV), that whole HDD is intended for storage for the CCTV.

I wanted to check to see what would the best approach be to minimise wear on the SSD by utilising the HDD? Can I keep the Windows VM on the SSD and add the HDD as storage? Or would I have to move the Windows VM to that HDD too?

Thanks

Hi, both is possible.
My Favorite is, let the OS on SSD and create a second vDisk for the Data. Optional you can attach the whole Disk to the VM.

Thanks - and these approaches will reduce the wear on the SSD, even if the VM is running on the SSD?

If you reduce the write load, the SSD will live longer. The OS normally does not generate much write load.
