Hi all,

About 4 weeks ago I had asked about the guest agent and found what I had wasn't what I needed. Does anyone have the guest agent working for windows, and if you do, where/how did you get it?

There is no agent that you need

Unfortunately, that's not 100% accurate. Although there is no guest needed to make the VM work yes- BUT the guest agent allows for the backup job to do a FS freeze (or in Windows, use VSS), which provides better stability/consistency for the guest backup then just the snapshot function.

Plus, the agent also (from what I've read) supports (or at some point will support) the ability to properly shut down a windows guest which may at some point be implemented in ProxMox which would solve the problem of issues with shutting down windows guests through APCI (even after implementing the best practices listed in the PVE wiki, there are times where the Windows guest won't shutdown even when issued a shutdown command).

The guest agent offers some basic functionality now, and really it could offer a lot of potential in the future to give a more complete picture of a running VM (more similar to what you might see on VMWare or XenServer when their guest agents are installed) which could be really useful.

Whatever you say. I will continue using mine just fine without it. You say this thing exists, so how come it isn't found anywhere?

I think the QEMU guest agent is on the todo list. One feature it provides, which I miss, is the ability to display the guest IP.

Do a google search for qemu guest agent, or even a forum search.
Here's the first entry from a Google search: http://wiki.qemu.org/Features/QAPI/GuestAgent

unfortunately, pve devs can't keep a todo list available and updated, so noone else can see what is in the works and its status or not.
probably they expect everyone to follow the developer ML to see what's happening...
yes, there's http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Roadmap but take a loot at it now, it's a one-liner: " Roadmap: 4.0 will be based on Debian Jessie 8.0 "

add

agent: 1

to your vmid.conf

It's enable guest agent agent support.

(Then you need agent running in your linux|windows guest).

qga features implemented in proxmox :

filesystem freeze for snapshot && vm shutdown

Yes, that part I know - but I mean successfully compiling or locating a pre-compiled version?

Current versions of the virtio ISO from redhad contains precompiled guest agents for 32/64 bit windows. I could fix some my shutdown issue on windows 7 with it:- shutdown the vm- add agent:1 to the config- boot the vm- a new "PCI device" occurs- install vioserial driver from ISO- install guest-agent from ISO- If you need VSS, start the service (or reboot the vm, it's started automatically then)That's it.I'm going to test on a second (Windows 8.1) VM later today (it's in production use, so I cannot reboot it now).Thank you, proxmox team for supporting this feature!!!

Yes - actually - I'm amazed you found this post prior to my post from the other day about the new version of the Fedora Virtio here: http://forum.proxmox.com/threads/22105-QEmu-Guest-Agent-Drivers-update
