Hi All,

We're seeing a strange issue with a handful of Windows 2012 STD R2 VMs on Proxmox 7.1-10, virtio 0.219.

The VMs are up to date with patches.

They run fine for weeks, then without notice they crash.

On reboot the VM launches into Windows Automatic Repair Mode.

This never works, even if I mount and load the virtio drivers then perform a startup repair.

The VM just returns to 'Starting Automatic Repair' on next boot.

I have tried Troubleshooting: Reset My PC which also fails.

I can boot to command prompt and see the disks, data, etc.

I can even see everything in diskpart and run checkdsk, bcd repairs, etc but to no avail.

Many of the Microsoft recovery steps are useless and a waste of time.

I've tried switching disks back to SATA0 and IDE0 then repairing boot which does find Windows installations and runs successfully, however on boot it fails.

The only way I have been able to recover is to restore a previous backup.

Has anyone else come across this and what did you do ?

I would like to create a method for troubleshooting and resolving this challenge, happy to share it here.

Many thanks

D.
