Win2003 and VirtiO

Hi!

I'm new to proxmox and linux in commandline, so I am quite lost sometimes. So I'm trying to migrate a Windows 2003 SBS. However there are many errors on the current running system so I figured I should do a fresh install and then just restore the Domain, DNS, DHCP and SQL in the Windows environment leaving the errors behind.

Reading this http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Windows_2003_guest_best_practices I figured I should setup
virtio storage drivers. So I did more reading on here http://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Windows_VirtIO_Drivers#Introduction about getting the drivers and also used this guide http://c-nergy.be/blog/?p=1032 to F6 the drivers from a FDD.

As I come to the final step, the installation freezes at Windows is starting up.

Can anyone help me with this, or should I just use SATA for the drives and be happy with that?
Also, is there a way to have SPIC running on Win 2003?

you can install windows on ide,

then add a new temporary virtio drive, install virtio driver.
Then remove temporary drive, and change first disk from ide to virtio.

It should boot on virtio without any problem.

Also, after doing what spirit suggested, go to Options tab of the VM and select virtio as first boot device!

Hi!

Thanx for the help. But It's not working. Now it hangs at installing the driver. Maybe I don't have the correct drivers?
Clicking around I ended on the download page here: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Windows_Virtio_Drivers#Direct_download
Used the first driver iso in the list. Later also tried the latest drivers link.

After rebooting the system then hangs at boot. So I need to Stop the VM, remove the disk. Start again, then stop, add the disk and try a different driver...

Anyway do I have the correct drivers or not. I think that's the issue here.

Oh! Hey!

After final add of the disk and boot it didn't ask me for the drivers again. So i checked the Device Manager and it's right there. Maybe I missed something about Cache? Had it on Write Back. Leaving it on Default now, the system boots.

Need to try with the F6 drivers and No cache.

How do I change from IDE to Virtio?

hello,
for a fresh installation you should setup the VM with virtio hdd bus and virtio network

start installation from Windows ISO until windows is not able to see the disk, so you have to change to the driver CD iso (guess virtio-win-0.1.102 is recommended) and install the driver for Disk and network.
change back to window CD ISO, refresh Disk list and continue installation.
