I just add a Ceph RBD storage to my Proxmox cluster, but it seems Proxmox does not allow me to backup VMs on that storage,
What is the reason behind it?

I can't specify the RBD storage for backups, please see the attached picture, also edit form of storages has no field of contents for RBD

RBD is a block based storage. A storage for backup needs to be based on a file-system.

But to be clear, you can Backups VM using RBD for virtual disks (I assume Dietmar was talking about this).

In above mentioned link there's nothing about virtual disks

this page explains how backup works, including backups from virtual disks based on ceph rbd.

you cannot use ceph rbd as backup destination.

Ceph also provides the Ceph Filesystem (Ceph FS). It is a POSIX-compliant filesystem that uses a Ceph Storage Cluster to store its data. I think it would be interesting to add this option as an Storage Type for Proxmox.

In the meanwhile, I suppose you can set up a NFS server over your current CephFS.
