if somebody could try to apply the following patch: https://lore.proxmox.com/pve-devel/20241105092421.774448-2-d.csapak@proxmox.com/
it would be interesting which file_write has what exact error in the task log when starting & failing with 'cannot bind to vfio-pci'
applied the patch in /usr/share/perl5/PVE/SysFSTools.pm , no changes, but there is extra log
Code:
error writing '1022 7901' to '/sys/bus/pci/drivers/vfio-pci/new_id': File exists
TASK ERROR: Cannot bind 0000:08:00.1 to vfio
for me it looks like I have setup hostpci of GPU and sound (AMD) only
Code:

hostpci1: 0000:07:00.1,pcie=1,romfile=AMDGopDriver.rom
but the error to bind is about SATA controller as it's different ID

Im on vacation i will be back soon. Plan on upgrading it again as well as moving to the 6.11 kernel. I will get back with results.

i can't upgrade to 6.11 kernel. I use a github project that allows me to use mdev types and split a nvidia quadro p4000 between 4vms and the nvidia gridd driver will not build with dkms against the 6.11 kernel. I upgraded to 6.8.12-4 and it worked fine. If you have any tips or tricks for this that would be awesome to...

apt list --upgradable
Listing... Done
libpve-common-perl/stable 8.2.6 all [upgradable from: 8.2.5]
pve-firmware/stable,stable 3.14-1 all [upgradable from: 3.13-3]
qemu-server/stable 8.2.5 amd64 [upgradable from: 8.2.4]

These packages are still the same version that caused me issues.

Are the new packages your pushing going to have a different version number?

i sent an updated fix that should now fix both the cannot reset and bind to vfio issues: https://lore.proxmox.com/pve-devel/.../T/#mfe1b446a445313142686ed4ad0b64d0be759f877
if anybody could test it would be great :)
There is a difference, for sure the previous vfio bind error is resolved for the device 0000:08:00.1

at this point I won't be able to tell if there is different problem, but this is already related to GPU and not SATA controller as previously
Code:
error writing '1' to '/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:07:00.0/reset': Inappropriate ioctl for device
TASK ERROR: can't reset PCI device '0000:07:00.0'
it could be as well my setup, I am just doing that for first time, hopefully someone else can confirm

update:

I forgot `die` to `warn` change for reset, it went through then :)

Code:
error writing '1' to '/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:07:00.0/reset': Inappropriate ioctl for device
can't reset PCI device '0000:07:00.0'
error writing '1' to '/sys/bus/pci/devices/0000:07:00.1/reset': Inappropriate ioctl for device
can't reset PCI device '0000:07:00.1'
swtpm_setup: Not overwriting existing state file.

Still broken. Also you cant just downgrade libpve-common-perl. when doing so it tries to remove proxmox-ve and other core packages. You have to downgrade pve-firmware, qemu-server then libpve-common-perl. This is only way you can downgrade without removing core packages. This is happening on both amd and intel systems.

I am experiencing the same issue. I updated the node containing OPNsense and it broke the setup. I cannot start the vm anymore.

For the time being I dusted off an old EdgeRouter to keep my homelab running.

Same issue with my intel nic passthrough. Downgrading qemu-server then libpve-common-perl like awp suggested worked to get me back online.

Same issue here.

What I've been able to determine is that the second device fails to bind to vfio-pci.

I have a VM for a firewall, and the second line of the config is the device that never changes Kernel driver in use: from igc to vfio-pci
hostpci0: 0000:03:00.0,pcie=1
hostpci1: 0000:04:00.0,pcie=1

Since I have four ports, I even moved them over one place (4/5 to 3/4) and changed the config and it was always hostpci1 or the second line that remained on igc and did not bind to vfio-pci.

Manually unbinding and (re)binding allowed me to qm start my firewall without issue
echo -n "0000:04:00.0" > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/igc/unbind
echo -n "0000:04:00.0" > /sys/bus/pci/drivers/vfio-pci/bind

Thanks!

This worked for me:

Code:
apt-get install pve-firmware=3.13-3
apt-get install qemu-server=8.2.3
apt-get install libpve-common-perl=8.2.4

systemctl reboot

OPNsense up and running; EdgeRouter can go back into storage!

Just a FYI

I have run sudo apt-mark hold pve-firmware qemu-server libpve-common-perl

This allows you to upgrade other packages without worrying about these three being upgraded.
I have decided not to try upgrading again until a new version number is released for all three packages.
but allow other updates to happen like normal.

Do the devs have any idea what the next step is? I have updates rolling in for pve qemu and im afraid to upgrade. Idk if it depends on qemu-server or not.

New updates fixed issues. I unhold those three packages and upgraded everything good now.
In particular it should be fixed thanks to @dcsapak in libpve-common-perl >= 8.2.7 and qemu-server >= 8.2.6 both available in the testing repository at the time of this writing.

If you'd like to install the package, you can temporarily enable the repository (e.g. via the Repositories section in the UI), run apt update, run apt install libpve-common-perl qemu-server and disable the repository again, then run apt update again.
