If I'm reading this right...you're saying that there is no such thing as '--rsyncable' in gzip?
I know this is getting to be an older post but that is just plain wrong, and should probably be noted as such. The rsyncable option is set in the environment variable so that the resulting file can be rsynced without having to re-transmit most of the file.
