VMs restore

Hi, yesterday i did few mistakes and it looks like i will have to reinstall proxmox. If possible i would like to restore my VMs and LXCs. Since the drive with the virtual disks should be fine i dont think it should be an issue to restore them. Can somebody tell me how to do it please? Thanks

Proxmox has builtin backup and restore, although if you have a spare laptop or PC you should look into Proxmox Backup Server for dedup and fine-grained restore, among other features.

You can set the backup target to Samba / NFS or an external drive, you should NEVER use the root/OS disk for backup storage. This is for at least (2) reasons, A) the Proxmox installer will WIPE the target drive; and B) if the disk dies outright then so do your backups. There is also C) backup files may get corrupted or deleted, and storing them on the same disk that the OS runs on will not help you in a disaster.

GUI: Folder view / Datacenter / Backup # schedule backup jobs

To restore, after you reinstall Proxmox you need to re-define the Storage the same way as it was before. Then click in the Storage that has your backups and hit the Backups entry in the right pane. Click on a backup file and hit the Restore button

You should also be backing up your critical files on a regular/daily basis:

Look into the bkpcrit script, set target to NAS or non-root disk, schedule it nightly in cron, be well.
