Hi there,
i'm new to proxmox.
I've started some weeks ago with an old Sophos-Appliance with Proxmox 7 and pfSense running.
It works great - but after some hours or days, the pfSense becomes unstable: I got very high latency on the WAN-Interface. I tried some things, thought the hardware may be the cause, but i liked proxmox so i bought a new hardware.
Some of these chinese Router-Appliances from Ali (4 RJ45-Ports with 2,5Gbit, 32GB Cruical DDR4-RAM, 320GB Cruical 2,5" SATA-SSD, Intel N5105).
I've moved the previous VMs from the Sophos-Appliance to the new Hardware (mainly LXC-Containers, a Windows 10 VM, the pfSense) and it seams to work fine. But randomly, the pfSense-VM started to reboot/crash without any cause. I had some plugins running (ntopng, IPS, etc.) and deactivated/deinstalled them. No info for the cause in the logs.
So i thought, maybe the pfSense runs unstable - let's try OPNsense. So i setup a new OPNsense-VM (with guest tools, passed two NICs through), and after some days, this VM also randomly reboots (sometimes 1x per day, sometimes 2-3 days without any issue). The crash happends without any other load on the system (Host at ~10% CPU-Usage, only idle-load).
Then i tried many things an read everything i could find; what i did:
- Disabled balooning
- Changed the CPU-Type from host to the defaults and back
- Updated Proxmox with the Testing-Repostiry to 7.2.7
- Changed the VM-Type to Q35 and back
Till yesterday, where the Windows-VM randomly reboots. In the logs, the cause was a "unproper shutdown", also a crash without any reason. So it doesn't seem to be a problem with the OPNsense/pfSense; it seems to be a hardware- or proxmox-problem.
So i ran a Memtest86 over night - passed without any errors. Then i ran Prime95 to check the CPU over some hours - no problems. The SSD was new, also reported no problems. The Proxmox itself never had any issue, timeouts, hangs or crashes and ran for over a Week without any problem, till i rebootet it manually.
I have no idea, what the cause for this problems could be - has anybody some advice, how to troubleshoot this problem further?
Thanks in advance,
Bastian
