VM partitions disappeared after node reboot

On a independent proxmox node (8.3.1) with zfs raidz2 storage I've started a new VM with Alma 8 (from iso), creating /boot, / and swap as standard partitions on VM sda disk. Rebooted VM a couple of time after installation, forgot to install qemu-guest-agent, rebooted the node.

After proxmox node reboot, the VM was in a booting loop, telling can't find bootable device. The disk was there. I've booted a Alma 8 live cd iso to find that there were no partitions on the VM sda disk. The VM disk partitions were lost.

This is of course a very serious problem, loosing partitions on a VM disk. I'm not sure yet, but I will try to check if there are any data left that I can recover.

Does anybody encountered such issue? What seems to be the problem? Can it be a hardware issue?

Hi,
please post the output of pveversion -v and the VM configuration qm config <ID>. I'd also check the system logs/journal around the time of the reboot for any errors. To try and recover partition tables, there are tools like: https://www.cgsecurity.org/wiki/TestDisk
