But also keep in mind that "powersave" means the CPU will always run at the minimum possible clock so you are wasting most of the nodes performance. I would use "schedutil" instead, that way the node will clock idling cores on the lowest clock and still clock up cores that got load. That way cores are dynamically clocking between min and max clock depending on the workload.

Numerous benchmarks have been performed and they've shown a minimal performance impact ~5% and only at high loads.
 
What benchmarks did you run?
Here I see a massive performance impact when 16 cores are running only with 1200MHz with "powersave" instead of 3000Mhz only with "performance". A little performance hit I only get with "schedutil" where cores will vary between 1200 and 3000MHz depending on load.
 
My pfSense VM froze overnight. Does anyone in this thread happen to run pfsense as well? Have you seen it hang/freeze? There was nothing logged to console, just a dead VM which I had to hard reset.

What benchmarks did you run?

I've also been struggling with vm freezes, lxc containers and the host seem to survive quite happily. I've thrown a spare desk fan pointed directly at it and it has been much more stable since (freezes were happening within an hour to 3 consistently) its been 2 days since last freeze. its easy enough to test.

After setting my CPU governors to powersave mode, the CPUs are running at a constant 55C so I'm not so sure it's a heat issue?

If these freezes continue to happen, I might try running VMware ESXi and see if I get more stability using that. This really smells like some sort of a kernel issue which is specifically affecting the N5105 CPU architecture rather than a temperature one...

perhaps. in my specific situation I tried running newer and older kernels in different distros than the base proxmox one, and they all had freezing issues. i've tried debian and ubuntu, both newer and older (not an extensive list by any means) but the base proxmox is stable, no freezing there. also lxc containers for me have been stable.

all in all, throwing a fan at the top of the unit was a very simple thing to test and my cpu package temps are down to 35-40 according to sensors.

Since throwing a fan on have any of your VMs frozen at all or they're just freezing less than before?

If my VMs fail again, I'll try ESXi and I'll report back on my system stability.

its been about 2 days and i've had no freezes. When i tried changing my cpu type to "host" it was stable for about a day which was the longest I had stable VM's before adding cooling. its about 2 days since I added the fan and no freeze yet.

another 3 days of no freezing with the additional cooling. Now I need to pull it apart and see if there is some reason why its overheating so badly and at the very least, use better thermal transfer goop.

My VMs haven't frozen for 5 days. No fan but Proxmox running with powersave governor and temps at or around 55C, occasionally hitting 100C. Strange. Still running remote logging and verbose kernel logging.

Hi! May I know the kernel you are using? I can kinda narrow the problem down to kernel version ranging between 5.10.127 to 5.14.
(The former one running latest OpenWRT and the latter one Alpine 3.16 and AlmaLinux 9)
The AlmaLinux 9 on my VM shows similar symptoms which is that VM hangs after a few hours with full CPU and frozen console, however, the AlpineLinux has a little bit different behavior which is that the Golang program running in it crashes with Illegal instruction error (most likely CPU related), and during that period, the VM also freezes (But on Alpine, it can 'unfreeze' itself without even rebooting)

I'm not sure if it is virtualization related as the host PVE 7.2 runs kernel ver. 5.15 and I don't have a spare host system for testing. But I've installed kernel 5.15 on AlmaLinux 8 (prev. 4.18.0) for testing and I'll share with the results soon.

I'm running 2 VMs on my Proxmox server, pfSense and Ubuntu 22.04 running docker. Both have locked up at various points although not for the past 5 or so days - as usual with Murphy's law, they haven't locked up since running their kernels in verbose mode and running remote logging services in order to try and diagnose the freezes/lockups.

Kernel versions below:

Ubuntu: Linux 5.15.0-43-generic #46-Ubuntu SMP Tue Jul 12 10:30:17 UTC 2022 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
pfSense/FreeBSD: FreeBSD 12.3-STABLE FreeBSD 12.3-STABLE RELENG_2_6_0-n226742-1285d6d205f pfSense amd64

I also wonder if this has some impact on the VMs running under it. It makes sense that this could potentially be an issue.
 
Gyrex, I'm curious, I got my 5105 box of Aliexpress, did you (or from somewhere similar like Banggood etc)? If so I wonder if those who are posting here are the losers in the CPU bin lottery that low-cost sellers (like those on Ali/Banngood etc) use and we got CPUs that either generate a little more heat, or can handle heat a little less well.

The powersave governor reduces the boost speed which in turn keeps temps lower, as does a fan. Its a good working theory for the time being at least.

As to how different kernels can freeze or not, differing optimisations, patches, more things (or less) being built into them can all affect CPU load differently. My HomeAssistant VM runs 5.15.55 and idles about 10% of one core, my pfSense VM runs FreeBSD 12.3-stable and idles at ~1.5% of a single core. I also ran various versions of Debian and Ubuntu VM's with nothing additional installed, just going through the install clicking next where possible and they idled at the 20-30% of one core. I don't have any running now as I moved that load to LXC containers and their idle loads are now down to .1% above the host idle. All in all, for me, the VM's that locked up were the ones using the most CPU and causing the most heat. and it didn't matter what kernel they were running, although I didn't exhaustively try one VM and work my way up kernel versions with no other changes so my method isn't scientific by any stretch. for all my freezes the CPU usage in PVE summary was significantly above normal freeze. HA froze at about 30% CPU, Deb was often at 50% of 2 cores, or 75% of one. don't remember exactly what ubuntu froze at, but similar to deb I think.

I have an Intel NUC with the 5105 CPU and it's behaving the exact same way. The cooling is adequate and I think it's safe to assume that Intel didn't use low quality CPUs in their own product.
I am almost sure this is a kernel bug. Since it happens with every VM running different kernels and the host is not affected, I assume something is wrong with KVM.

Edit: For what it may be worth, I tested with 5.10 kernel on proxmox host and I got the same crashes.

I bought my NUC from Aliexpress (https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005004302428997.html).

You raise an interesting point about it potentially being the CPU itself and this could definitely be the case. The common denominators between everyone on here is that we're all running the Intel N5105 CPU and we're running Proxmox with various FreeBSD/Linux VMs.

I haven't had a freeze for a week but the 2 freezes I had (pfSense and Ubuntu 22.04 both froze) under very little load is still making me nervous. One way to try and isolate this issue further is to run a completely different kernel and/or OS on the bare metal (VMware ESXi, Windows etc.). I'm happy to be the guinea pig here and move my routing function back to my old router and load a different OS onto the NUC. I'll report back with my findings.
 
Has anyone had a VM freeze in the past week or so and is fully updated on both Proxmox and VMs (apt update && apt dist-upgrade)?

I'm wondering if something has been updated on the host (or VMs) which has potentially fixed the issue...
