Hi all,
I'm newbie on proxmox and linux as well.
I'm looking for an advice on how to configure a vm file server (Debian) with storage attached (not included in the VM)
I have a nuc with two hard drive, the first one dedicated for Proxmox and VM and I would like to use the second one (ext4 formatted) for my documents.
Is the directory the right way to configure the system? And, how can attache the second hard drive to the Debian vm?
Sorry in advance if this is a silly question but I googled for a solution but I didn't find a definitive guide for this.
Any help on this will be very appreciated.
Thanks a lot.

All of my VMs and their data are important to me. I expect to be able to snapshot, backup, and restore my VMs in their entirety, including all data.

Virtualizing is the whole idea here. Hardware passthrough can be a good compromise for specific cases, but not the general case. The more hardware you passthrough, the less virtual your machine is, and the less you potentially benefit.

Is there a specific reason you want to pass through your storage?

If this was for me, I would make sure both disks in my NUC were identical, and configured as a ZFS mirror. All of my VMs would have virtual disks on this physical mirror, and there would be no physical storage attached to the VMs.

All the VMs and LXCs on my PVE host would have an image-level backup to another physical storage separate from my PVE host (Proxmox Backup Server for example) and they would have a file-level backup to yet a third separate physical storage.

Hi alyarb,
thanks a lot for your prompt reply.
I have two different hard drive and I don't have hardware for an external backup but I planned to have an online backup using Ondrive (driveone/onedrive container application for linux or rclone).
So, my approch is not the best. The best option is the vm with storage included.
Thanks a lot for your help.
I really appreciate.
