Hi All,

Was just wondering if there was any way that we can convert SCSI VM Disks to VirtIO. I think that having them formatted SCSI is taking up more space and I'm not sure how to go about converting them if they are.

I could be wrong with what I have said in the above statement, however happy to hear peoples thoughts etc.

Cheers.

There is no such thing as "scsi format". SCSI is a protocol.
A disk presented via SCSI protocol inside a vm is more than likely already using virtio at hypervisor level, with latest PVE.
Your disks are taking space either because there is data there or because they are not enabled to trim removed data. A 3rd possibility is that data stored does not match filesystem block size. I.e. zillion 1kb files on 4k aligned file system.

My suggestion is to analyze your environment and come back with a better feel for what you have.

Good luck.

Hi bbgeek17.

Many thanks for getting back to me first of all, its appreciated!

Once I read your reply, I realized that I had done gooft and yeah, completely agree with what you have said. (It's been a long day with no coffee!)

I've done a bit of further digging and I've noticed on the two offending VMs that they have the "RAW" flag on their disks. I've since wiped them from the storage and voila, my space has returned.

The two VMs weren't majorly important and I'd been looking for a reason to rebuild them so now I do! However, I'm hoping you can answer this for me. The two VMs in question were restored via Proxmox Backup Appliance a few days ago. Does PBA default to restoring with the "RAW" flag enabled. I've had a look at the settings and cant see anything which would indicate that the VMs disks would go back like that? I'm just a bit wary now since i've only recently started using Proxmox day-to-day and came from a VMWare background etc.
