Hello everyone, this is my second post here so sorry if it's in the wrong place.
I have 2 pci devices passed through to a vm, one being an nvme drive which works fine and has windows installed on it and I can boot from it into the vm no problem.
The problem comes in when I attempt to add the gpu with an associated mdev I receive an error stating the following
Code:
"swtpm_setup: Not overwriting existing state file.

kvm: -device vfio-pci,sysfsdev=/sys/bus/mdev/devices/00000001-0000-0000-0000-000000000100,id=hostpci1,bus=pci.0,addr=0x11: vfio 00000001-0000-0000-0000-000000000100: error getting device from group 55: Input/output error

Verify all devices in group 55 are bound to vfio-<bus> or pci-stub and not already in use

stopping swtpm instance (pid 2089) due to QEMU startup error

waited 10 seconds for mediated device driver finishing clean up

actively clean up mediated device with UUID 00000001-0000-0000-0000-000000000100

TASK ERROR: start failed: QEMU exited with code 1"

I am confused though, as there is no group 55, with the output of this script
Code:
for d in $(find /sys/kernel/iommu_groups/ -type l | sort -n -k5 -t/); do
    n=${d#*/iommu_groups/*}; n=${n%%/*}
    printf 'IOMMU Group %s ' "$n"
    lspci -nns "${d##*/}"
done;
I receive the following,
Code:

Which makes no sense as there is no group 55?

I've been on this for hours and would like to get this working so any help is appreciated.

Things you can try

Try running

mdevctl types

If error is listed and you have nvidia-vgpu-mgr.service run

systemctl restart nvidia-vgpu-mgr.service

Then try mdevctl types again if it lists properly try running the vm again (i have to do this at every boot usually not sure what started the error)

Make sure your vgpu profile is not over allocating vram (set just below max if you have it set to max and try again just to see if that is your problem)

Make sure nvidia-smi and nvidia-smi vgpu are returning properly

Check this guide for how to unlock vgpu on consumer gpus for steps you may have missed in setup

https://gitlab.com/polloloco/vgpu-proxmox

(if you are trying to passthrough the only gpu on the system that can be problematic and you might have better luck unlocking it to pass a vgpu profile)

mdevctl types does return all of the profiles available.
I believe that nvidia-smi and nvidia-smi vgpu also returned the correct values but can't recall for sure - will test when I get back home.
I can try to allocate under max vram but I think I did that with an override profile but can't remember for sure.
EDIT: nvidia-smi returns a value but nvidia-smi vgpu returns "No supported devices in vGPU mode" I believe my issue is 2 fold, wrong type of format used in my override file, and 2 I don't remember applying the below
Code:
mkdir /etc/systemd/system/{nvidia-vgpud.service.d,nvidia-vgpu-mgr.service.d}
echo -e "[Service]\nEnvironment=LD_PRELOAD=/opt/vgpu_unlock-rs/target/release/libvgpu_unlock_rs.so" > /etc/systemd/system/nvidia-vgpud.service.d/vgpu_unlock.conf
echo -e "[Service]\nEnvironment=LD_PRELOAD=/opt/vgpu_unlock-rs/target/release/libvgpu_unlock_rs.so" > /etc/systemd/system/nvidia-vgpu-mgr.service.d/vgpu_unlock.conf
There may be a 3rd with the link that zenowl77 posted, because the driver version I used does not have a patch.
I may start over and follow this guide instead, it's a brand new proxmox install so I have no issues with wiping it and starting over.

If you have max vram set that could absolutely be your problem, looks like you have an 8gb gpu, i do to (tesla p4) i ended up using a custom 7gb profile that seems to work great

Here is the 7gb profile memory setting to add if you want it so you can get nearly all your vram if the extra 1gb over 6gb matters for you as it did in my use case.

framebuffer = 0x1A0000000
framebuffer_reservation = 0x20000000 # 7GB

I have followed the instructions from polloLoco and it worked perfectly.
I wish I would have found that in the first place haha
