Hi!
I do currently have two servers in my network, one running Proxmox Backup Server 1.1-1 and one Proxmox VE 6.0 with works fine.
Because the VE 6.0 is on a remote server updating/installing 8.0 will be slight problematic so I avoid that for now (please don't judge ).
Now I am adding a new server to my network with I would prefer to use 8.0 straight away. The question is can VE 8.0 backup to Backup Server 1.1-1?
Or another way, can VE 6.0 backup to Backup Server 3.0 (the backup server is local so updating it won't be a problem)?

Yes, but you cannot use newer features like namespaces in PBS datastores, as the older server won't understand them.

Or another way, can VE 6.0 backup to Backup Server 3.0 (the backup server is local so updating it won't be a problem)?
Yes, that should work too, but same here: newer features won't work.

So if you're content in just doing backups to the root namespace of a datastore either option works.

Note that outside some specific HW compat stuff, the in place upgrade from either PBS or PVE version to the next major stable release worked quite well for most our users and for single nodes the VM/CT outage is limited to one guest reboot. Testing and a side channel (for remote servers) are still advised though.
