Hi,

im setting up the default relay and some transports. Im a bit confused over the MX option.

In the default realy, you enter the host where the email should relay to by default, that is set to hostname.domain.com so what is the purpse of the MX lookup? Also what is the point in the smarthost option? is that the same as the relay?

On transports, the similar applies, you need to enter the destination relay host, this cant be blank so what is the point in mx lookup if the system is relaying to a host anyway?

thanks

Hi,

instead of a dedicated hostname (hostname.domain.com), you could also only enter a domain.com and use their MX records. That would help if you have primary and secondary or any other failover concept to be able to use more than one destination host. Smarthost is an additional outgoing hop, if you're e.g. behind a dialup account and can't send mails directly.

Same on transports, but you only need transports if you want different routes per relay domain.

Regards,
Christian
