Hello,

Now that PBS' S3 support has been around for a while and people have been using it (and the dev team has been putting so much effort into continuously refining it), I'm curious: for someone who's new to S3-based storage solutions, when is using S3-based object storage a better option than any of the other official/unofficial alternatves (Tape, SMB, NFS, iSCSI, external detachable disk)?

Is it mainly meant to allow backups to be sent to offsite services that use S3? Are there scenarios with the current version of PBS where S3 is a better option for backing up from PBS local storage to a local NAS than other options?

Thanks. :)

It's used primarily for offsite backups. For example, if I want to keep and offsite copy of my backups in AWS/Backblaze/Wasabi/etc., I can connect to them using S3 to transfer the data.

I'm not familiar enough to tell you if there are any benefits to using it on-premise over any of the others, unless your specific workflow would be simpler with S3 for some reason.
