I will be making another Proxmox host in the near future -

I am planning to use the backup files on an external USB to restore the VM's on the new host -- (obviously being sure to shut them down on the first host.). First host is LVM, second I am planning to use ZFS (just bec I want to learn about it) ..

Is there anything wrong with this method ? The first host is PVE 5.3-8. The new host would be the latest verson 6.xx ..

I was thinking with 2 hosts, I could move the VM's using the newtwork, but I think that requires shared storage ?

THX,

To live migrate between two hosts with local storage they need to be in a cluster. AFAIK in version 5 it was only possible via the CLI and with version 6 the GUI started to support it as well.

If you plan to shutdown the old host for good after the migration it might be a bit much to create a cluster and remove the cluster config afterwards. If you can live with the downtime creating a backup and restoring[0] the VMs from it on the new server should be the easiest way.
