I have a 5 node proxmox cluster currently running 6.5.-15. What makes the most sense to me is to clear one node, upgarde to 7.4 then upgrade to 8. Then perform the same procedure on another node.

Should there be any issues with running a combination of Proxmox 6, 7, and 8 nodes for a few days?

The upgrade documentation 7 to 8 [2] says:
Prerequisites
Upgraded to the latest version of Proxmox VE 7.4 on all nodes.

So I would:
  • Install all available updates for 6.x on all nodes
  • Upgrade all nodes to 7 as in [1] described
  • Upgrade all nodes to 8 as in [2] described
If you use Ceph, don't forget you may have to upgrade it before doing the next upgrade of Proxmox VE.
