Hi all,

I don't know if this question is asked before but I want to know if you can upgrade a production environment based on Proxmox 3.4 to latest version of 4.X without problems. Is there a way to make backups before so that you can return to version 3.4. and how much time takes this upgrade. On which Linux Debain version is Proxmox 4.X based?

Thanks!

On which Linux Debain version is Proxmox 4.X based?

  • based on Debian Jessie 8.6.0
  • Linux kernel 4.4.19
  • KVM/qemu 2.6.1
  • LXC: update to 2.0.4

I would backup my vms and containers using the backup tools. You can always recover them after a fresh install of the 3.4 version. Just make sure to shut the machines down first for more reliability.

Because of the major kernel update, there is no easy upgrade, plan carefully and use the migration tools described in below migration documentation.

Currently I have Debian 7.11, so that might be tricky or maybe not possible?
And that is why you say:

In a short answer: Reinstall the machine?

My first upgrade "trail" I could not start my containers. The basic principle is that the LXC containers require compatible kernel for the host and the guest.

Basically I migrated them to a KVM (before upgrading), by setting up a new KVM Image and copying everything manual.

No you don't have to reinstall everything you can you do a dist upgrade. But before that you need to uninstall some components from proxmox. This guide is actually very comprehensive.
