Hello,
I have been running ProxMox for some time now on a single server, 120gb SSD for boot and 240gb RAID 1 (via Dell h700 raid card) for VMs, I had some difficulty with storage when I first setup ProxMox, coming from ESXi but switching for the clustering/HA features, I ended up with a Directory on the 240gb RAID 1, and have been running all my VMs and hosting all my ISOs from that single directory.
What I'm now trying to do is add another 240gb SSD to the server as temporary storage, migrate all the VMs from the 240gb RAID 1 to the 240gb temp SSD, format the 240gb RAID 1, then create a ceph pool with two other ProxMox servers with identical 240gb RAID 1 + 120gb boot SSD arrays locally. I tried creating a new Volume Group called TempStorage, but it won't let me copy my thin-provisioned VMs over as qcow2, it forces me to move them as RAW, and to my understanding, this is because I need to create a directory on top of the volume group for the VMs to live inside, however, create directory says "no disks unused". When viewing "Disks", I see sda (the raid1 array), "type" unknown, "usage" mounted, "Size" 223GiB, "GPT" Yes, then just the model and serial and SMART info, disk sdb (the ProxMox boot disk) shows up identically but with its respective size and serial and whatnot. When it comes to sdc (the temp ssd), "usage" shows as LVM, and everything else is otherwise identical to the drives above again respective to its own model/size. What I deduce from this is I did something wrong in my formatting process that's preventing "usage" from showing "mounted" on sdc and is instead making it show up as "LVM", and something about that prevents me from making a directory.
So the question im posing is what exactly did I do wrong? How should I be handling this? I won't pretend I understand much about ProxMox storage, so some guidance on how I should be proceeding to follow best practises for storage is highly appreciated, I've attempted my own research, on top of consulting the documentation, but it's not really helping me clear up what I've done wrong, and what I'm doing right/wrong for my desired configuration. Are directories for holding VMs even the right solution? or am I way off base? Anything to get me on track to understanding storage here is a huge help.
