I am completely new to proxmox and am trying to learn how to use it.

I installed Windows 11 Pro VM and gave it 4 cores, 8GB ram, 120GB Storage, etc.
Everything worked fine, it installed, updated and I configured everything.

But after trying to clone the machine the problems started.
It cloned it just fine, and the new Windows starts up. But when I try to do updates I get an error saying that my CPU is not supported.

Why is that, and can it be fixed?

I also managed to convert my working VM into a template, not knowing that the template cant be restored. That is fine, as I can just make a new machine from that template, but when I do, the same things happens as with the clone, suddenly the CPU is not supported.

Also, is it possible to remove a template? (No need to have a template that is not working)

Please help!

Select the template, in the top right corner of the GUI select "more", and in the dropdown menu that opens select "remove".

Thank you!

A follow up question on that, once I remove a template or a VM, is it possible to change the ID of another VM?

The template that I just removed had the ID 100, and I would like to convert my VM to 100 now, down from 101.

That is the VM that says the CPU is not supported, but I am saving it in case there is a solution for that.

The easiest way to change the ID would be to clone your VM and remove the one with ID 101.

Regarding the unsupported CPU, could this be windows 11 not liking some configuration? Please give the exact error message and where it occurs. Can you update on the original VM?

Yes there was no problem updating the original VM. So what ever is happening is happening with the clone for some reason.

The error occurs when I want to update to Windows 11, version 22H2. It goes to like 8% and then does a system check to see if my computer is compatible with windows 11. And say that my computer is not compatible.

I am attaching a snapshot of the message, but it is in Swedish.

Maybe not all the VM configuration was copied correctly? I had a similar issue with Windows 11 when PVE gave it the default emulated processor (Common KVM Processor)

The easiest way to compare is by running the sdiff /etc/pve/qemu-server/<VMID1>.conf /etc/pve/qemu-server/<VMID2>.conf
command in the Proxmox terminal (to enter the terminal you need to go to Proxmox via SSH, or right click on note in the web UI and run Shell)
<VMIDn> - number, ID of virtual machine

Do you mean to compare with the original VM?
If so, I dont have it anymore, I managed to convert it to a template, and after creating a machine from the template I have the exact same problem.

But if I look at the hardware the CPU is Standard (kvm64). Should I change that?

Also, I am completely new to this, so not sure how you mean right click on the note? where do I find that?
(Sorry for noob questions.)

Sorry, mistyped. On Node (PVE Server) in Web UI. But since there is no original virtual machine left, the comparison of the configuration no longer makes sense :)

Should I change that?
Yes. Try changing to "host". (Upd. While I was writing the message, you already did it :) )

Yes, thanks so much for all the help! :)

I asume that HOST means the Host machines CPU? so its like a passthrough?
And if I choose something else it will be like an emulation?

If so, does the emulation impact the performance somehow?

you're welcome :)

As I understand it, "host" is an emulation of a processor with the same manufacturer, model and set of supported instructions as on your host machine. True, I could be wrong here, it's better to ask for a more competent specialist in virtualization.

In the case of virtualization, this is always emulation, which always affects (though not much) performance.

By the way, in the case of Windows - I would not recommend cloning a virtual machine that has already gone through OOBE.

Perhaps you should make a template out of a VM that you set up in audit mode. This will avoid a lot of problems when introducing new VMs to Windows AD Domain.

You can read more about audit mode and OOBE in Windows at https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/w...windows-to-audit-mode-or-oobe?view=windows-11
