I suspect these two problems are related, but I am not 100% sure. Running Proxmox v8.1.3.

Problem 1: Unable to mount drives when creating VM

Today I attempted to create a VM on which I would run Windows Server 2022. Here is the hardware configuration:

When this machine boots, I get the following error during POST and, since it is unable to see the DVD, I cannot move forward:

`bdsdxe failed to load boot dvd-rom`. THere error is similar to this one:

Problem 2: Cannot delete this VM
When I attempt to delete this VM and start over, I receive the following error:

My guess is that these two problems are related. I would appreciate pointers/advice on how to debug each.

1. Is the machine already installed ? If so you can remove the CD.
The mistake is often caused by a wrong boot order. You can check the boot order in the VM options.
The first boot entry should be the controller of the harddisk on which you installed windows server 2022

2. Did use a samba share for your VM ?

Thank you for the quick response.

1. No, the machine never installed. I have "inserted" the CD and have also tried removing the CD.

2. No, there is no Samba share involved at all. The underlying VM disks are raw format stored locally. (The ISO is stored locally also.)

have you checked the boot order ?

If the boot order is correct and the CD is not bootable i'd assume, that the CD has got issues.
Even though this does not explain the cifs mount error

Thank you again for the reply. Unfortunately, still having the same POST problems.

I created yet another new VM just to make sure it wasn't something unique to those first two VMs. See new screenshot below, as well as hardware configuration captured beneath. Again: this is from the POST screen; nothing ever boots. I've tried changing the boot order as you suggested (thank you). Sadly, still no difference.

It appears that none of the virtual drives is even being found. Specifically, neither of the CD/DVD drives is, nor is the hard disk. I have confirmed this by swapping out ISOs and still see the same errors. If I am reading this correctly, neither of the virtual CD/DVD drives hosting ISO files (the main Windows installer or the Virtio ISO) is being found. And it appears that the main

RESOLVED

Here are updates on causes and mitigations in case anyone searches this in the future:

Problem 1: Boot Errors
1. Both of the Windows Server ISOs I was trying were unbootable. When I finally tried a 3rd, I was able to make the machine boot.
2. When you have an unbootable ISO, the error message is somewhat misleading ("... Not Found")—makes you think the drive itself is missing.

Problem 2: Cannot Delete VMs
3. If you try to purge disks or jobs in queues, your delete may fail.
4. Therefore, untick any "purge" boxes and try the "simple" delete.
5. If that works, clean up any disks separately.
