Attempting to install Proxmox on a new Dell PowerEdge. It seems to be failing at the DHCP stage. We don't have a DHCP server...is one required for installation?

It rather seems the graphical installer fails, it'd be great if you can check out the other TTYs (CTRL+ALT+F2, and F3) maybe we can get some more details about the actual error there.

Hi Thomas,

Thank you for your feedback. I think I found something that's relevant.

I found the following in (CTRL+ALT+F2 :

Proxmox VE must already have vi and nano check /usr/bin/vi or /usr/bin/nano
I found vi in /usr/bin. nano was missing.

That said, your original link with that Xorg configuration file modification doesn't work for my situation since running Xorg -configure results in a pile of errors.

Nothing to specific, I'm afraid. But, you could try:
  • Editing the GRUB command line of the installer initial selection and adding nomodeset to the linux kernel boot line
  • try an older installer like Proxmox VE 6.4 and upgrade to PVE 7.0 afterwards, this has no big disadvantage, but it would be already useful to see the graphics works there so we'd know if it's really a regression in one of kernel, firmware, or the mesa package
  • Install on top of a plain Debian: https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Install_Proxmox_VE_on_Debian_11_Bullseye

@t.lamprecht Thank you for the feedback. Is Proxmox 6.4 built on an older version of Debian? Does your ISO update process also upgrade the OS when Debian has an OS Update available?

Yes, you can check the docs support table for a PVE to Debian version mapping:
https://pve.proxmox.com/pve-docs/chapter-pve-faq.html#faq-support-table

Does your ISO update process also upgrade the OS when Debian has an OS Update available?
Sorry, but what do you mean exactly with "ISO upgrade"? The creation of a new ISO?
The ISOs are frozen in time, a single major release will keep the same major Debian release, and PVE point updates (like 6.4 or a future 7.1) also update the shipped Debian release to the latest point release + most recent security updates.

But, once you're installed PVE you get PVE and Debian (security & bugfix) updates through the repositories.

@t.lamprecht

Sorry for the confusion. Here's the scenario:

If I install Proxmox VE 7.0 from the ISO, does Proxmox offer an in-place upgrade to a new version of Debian, e.g. 12 and/or Proxmox 8.0 when they are available?

Could I use the Proxmox 7.0 ISO to update a box running Proxmox 6.4?

We offer in-place upgrades for all past major releases, e.g., 4.4 -> 5.x, then 5.4 -> 6.x and now 6.4 -> 7.x, so I'd say it's rather safe to assume that yes, we'll also provide such upgrade paths in the future.

Not for the common case, while the ISO provides a Debian like repo it is naturally contained to a more minimal set of packages that are available for Debian and misses the server parts of ceph completely, so no, in most cases you need to use the Debian and Proxmox VE repositories as described in https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Upgrade_from_6.x_to_7.0#In-place_upgrade
