So I am trying to setup an Ubuntu guest, as a KVM guest. I can create and configure it just fine, boot the live cd, use it, etc. When I go to install it gets almost all the way through and then errors out on the boot loader install (grub).
The message is "Executing 'grub-install (hd0)' failed." I have tried specifying the partiton in the installer and get the same error but with the partition target: "Executing 'grub-install (/dev/sda1)' failed."
This error occurs in both the standard and alternate Ubuntu 8.04.1 AMD64 installers. I have not tested with 32 bit. Also it occurs if I use SCSI or IDE disk types (haven't tried virtio)
Any ideas? Seems like it must be a disk permission or creation problem, grub doesn't seem to like the disks...

Update.
Ok so with the Alternate installer (text based) once the grub install fails it allows you to go back and choose lilo instead, that worked just fine. So looks like it is an incompatibility with grub.

use i386 ubuntu 8.04 or 8.04.1 - works without any problem (IDE, SCSI, VIRTIO disks).
