I'm looking best practices and/or recommendation as how best to move a VMs currently residing on a ESXi host to the same host after converting it to Proxmox. Is external Hard Drive export the only way or am I missing a trick?

You may have missed the "import wizard" feature that was released a while ago: https://www.proxmox.com/en/services...vironment/proxmox-ve-import-wizard-for-vmware
That said, for above to work ESXi and PVE need to be running in parallel. If you are doing an in-place replacement, then proper backup/restore (Veeam) is preferred. Using external hard drive is an option as well.
