I have been running a Proxmox server for about a year and a half, simply hosting Home Assistant and Pi-hole. I am in the process of adding 2 new "servers" and have been doing a lot of research about configuration. Here is my proposed thoughts. I would love to hear any pros/cons of this approach, or if you think I am doing anything wrong or any better ideas you may have.
Existing PC (No. 1) is a Core i5 with 16 GB RAM and 256GB SSD
Two new PCs (No. 2 and No. 3) are Core i7, both with 32 GB Ram. One (No. 2) has 128GB NVMe drive and a 320GB HDD. Other (No. 3) will be 500 GB NVMe drive.
Here is what I am thinking:
(No. 1) Essentially a backup server at this point. Use as "sandbox" if I want to try out new VMs/LXCs software.
(No. 2) My primary machine for Home Assistant VM and Pihole LXC, and possibly adding Friagte LXC (or similar), a Windows 11 VM, possibly Homebox LXC, possibly some type of network monitoring
(No. 3) NAS running either Open Media Vault or True Nas, using 128GB of the drive for Proxmox/OS and the remainder for storage, configured as ZFS (??)
* Cluster the 3 machines (for combined interface, and to be able to migrate VMs easily if needed)
* I don't really see a huge need for High Availability because Home Assistant needs external dongles (Zigbee and Zwave) passed through, so failover doesn't help a whole lot (does it?) I supposed I could failover Pi-hole LXC just for simplicity, but that is low impact if failed.
* I also have a spare 1 TB external USB/SSD that I can connect somewhere (probably TrueNas) for additional, albeit slower, storage needs (e.g. overnight backups)
* Can I put Proxmox Backup Server on either No 1. or No 3. ??
Love to hear thoughts and opinions! Thanks in advance!
