Terminals (xterm.js, noVNC) not working over remote access connections

I have a web public-facing interface to my Proxmox instances. When I'm on my local network, web terminals work fine. I don't open SSH out because my servers have been the subject of multiple SSH attacks. I would just use the web terminals - but they just don't work. noVNC refuses to cooperate, and xterm.js throws error 1006. (I've checked the xterm.js 1006 post on here before, wasn't relevant and didn't help).

Any ideas?

how do you expose your ui to the public? if you use a reverse proxy (e.g. nginx) you have to configure websocket use too, see e.g. https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Web_Interface_Via_Nginx_Proxy
