Hi, I have debian 9 and installed proxmox like this: https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Install_Proxmox_VE_on_Debian_Stretch

when i want to create a container i get this error:

TASK ERROR: no such volume group 'pve'


I added the node to an existing proxmox cluster

Hi,

it sound like you want to create the container on a local storage which was not setup on this node (gets automatically setup with PVE installer, but would need manual setup when installing on top of Debian).
Which storage did you select when creating the CT? local-lvm ?

Try either "local" which points to /var/lib/vz and should always work (warning, fills up your root disk if this is not on a separate disk/mount point).
Or if wanted, create a lvm thin storage https://pve.proxmox.com/wiki/Storage:_LVM_Thin (LVM thin is setup on an existing LVM, if you do not have one you have to create this first, consult the internet for various tutorials/resources).
Note, this is only needed if you want it and its features, if you have another place where VMs and CTs should be stored then you may not need this.

Yep exactly i tried to install it on 'local', but thats not for containers or disk images, so I'llt try that with lvm, thanks

For simplicity I just used "folder". Is there any major advantage in using lvm-thin?

You get efficient snapshots (and clones) at storage level, but if you use qcow2 for the disk you can also make snapshots there - if needed.
It is normally a bit faster, but that also depends on usage and could be a nelecgtable amount.
You could always add a disk later on and experiment with other storage technologies (lvm-thin, zfs, ...) if you feel you miss out on something with the directory storage.
