Gotcha, I remember doing that with 2 drives. But drive 0 is always default correct?

no as soon as you have multiple drives configured, you need to explicitly give one

erase failed - Illegal Request, Additional sense: Invalid command operation code

that is because we use a command that's only available on lto-5 (format media), we probably will add a workaround for lto-4 that uses a different command
