for tapes there is the feature of hardware compression.

But is it sinful to use it? Could it used by proxmox-tape?

PBS already compresses everything in software with zstd and this is hardcoded. I would guess compressing data that is already compressed won't help much.

AFAIR from our tests (and from some users), the hardware compression on the tape is basically for "free" and did compress a little (probably mostly the indexes, not the already compressed chunks), so there is basically no reason to explicitly turn it off
