Sync from remote, to remote, or both?

I'm setting up a PBS that has large storage and can manage data from several sources. This is reachable, but the source is in a VPN and I don't have intention to open security in that direction. So, the "local" PBS is storing the backups, and being the remote listening, can i sync from the local to the remote? According to the docs, I guess that the remote has to start the sync job (download), and I'm not sure if this can be done the other way (upload).

I intend the local to host the master copies, and sync them via "upload" to remote PBS. If this is not possible, the only chance I see is backup directly on the remote and tell the local server to sync (download) the data.

Am I doing wrong assumptions?

Hi,
with the newly release Proxmox Backup Server in version 3.3 sync jobs can now also push data to a remote for offsite backups. Please see the announcement https://forum.proxmox.com/threads/proxmox-backup-server-3-3-released.158192/
